Tony Morgan talks about Stayin’ Alive

Once again I’m stoked to be partnering with Tony Morgan on the Leisure Suit Series. Tony released the third installment of his e-book recently: Stayin’ Alive. This series is all about helping churches get unstuck, stay healthy, and accelerate life change.

The first eBook in the Leisure Suit Series, The Leisure Suit Trap: 8 Reasons Your Church Is Stuck, focused on why churches get stuck. The second installment, Hanging Up the Leisure Suit: How to Get Unstuck, addressed out-of-date, out-of-touch, or just plain every-day-as-normal church environments, systems, and processes. Is your leadership an obstacle to community?

Most leaders don’t intentionally do it. It just happens. The shift is so subtle that we hardly even notice it until the signs appear that we’ve lost touch with the people that we lead. Over time…

  • We stop thinking about how we can help them reach their goals and start focusing on achieving our goals.
  • We stop looking at what’s best for our people rather than our next pet project.
  • We stop considering the needs of our people in exchange for keeping up with the latest trends. Continue Reading…

3 Common Ruts Churches Fall Into

Rut.

Not a particularly attractive word. Not really an encouraging definition either. Check this out:  “…a settled or established habit or course of action, especially a boring one.” There are many things I don’t want to be boring… my marriage, my job, my friends, my church! However, when we implement new habits and don’t continually re-evaluate their effectiveness, boring is where we end up.

Tony Morgan addresses this in the second installment of his Leisure Suit eBook series, How to Get Unstuck. I love Tony’s focus on processes and systems. He gets how important they are. He also realizes churches often develop processes but don’t know how to measure their effectiveness, letting them stagnate without even realizing it. The result is a rut.

Tony Morgan and the next “Leisure Suit” eBook

Tony Morgan just released the second of four eBooks in his Leisure Suit Series. This is an excerpt from the introduction:
The Leisure Suit Series is not about updating your Web site, becoming a more seeker-friendly congregation, changing the kind of worship songs (or hymns) you sing, or even what a leadership team structure should look like. Some of those things may need to be addressed, but only after you take a look below the surface to figure out why things are done a certain way and what God is calling you to do to live out the gospel message.

Why CCB partnered with Tony Morgan on Leisure Suit Series

I think my first introduction (as with many) to Tony Morgan was via social networking. He is brilliant at leveraging the digital media space to influence church leadership theory and practice. When our paths crossed several months ago and we finally met in person, I realized that not only did he live up to his tweets and blog posts but he is a really cool guy to hang out with.

I first learned about The Leisure Suit series concept through a mutual friend. Before I saw the connection between the work we are doing at Church Community Builder and the series, I personally connected with it. The leisure suit was a great way to describe what I have seen too many times in my own church experience and in my work with churches across the country. It’s just too easy to stay focused on what is functional and operationally sound while avoiding the tough questions which reveal whether or not you are really making an impact. Sometimes, it feels better to focus on whether more people are showing up than it does to focus on how we are really changing lives. Tony goes right at this issue in a very practical way and I love that! Continue Reading…

CCB partners with Tony Morgan on eBook series

Tony Morgan

I’m really excited to tell you that we’ve recently partnered with Tony Morgan on his upcoming eBook series that he alludes to at the end of a recent post. There are going to be some unique aspects of this series. Honestly, my first look at this opportunity left me wondering if this was the right decision. But as Tony and I talked, it became clear that our hearts were in the same place and we are headed in the same direction.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you much more right now other than that. I just wanted you to know that CCB is thinking bigger than the “same old, same old” when it comes to connecting ministry with technology. Our focus is so much broader than technology. We share the desire and passion of our church clients in seeing life change occur as a direct result of encountering the Gospel.
